Karl Marx Stadt was the name of the city of Chemnitz during the existence of the GDR (German Democratic Republic) from 1953-1990. FC Karl Marx Stadt was the local football club and belonged among the significant teams of the East German league. The club represented socialist ideals and was connected with the name of the founder of Marxism. After German reunification, the city returned to its original name Chemnitz and the club underwent transformation.
