Dynamo Dresden was one of the most successful clubs in East Germany (GDR) and their participation in European cups was a prestigious affair. Malmö FF from Sweden was among the strong Nordic clubs with rich European tradition. The 1984/1985 season was the era of divided Europe when clubs from East and West met in European competitions.
