Expert note – FAQ

What is Holmenkollbakken?
Holmenkollbakken is a famous ski jump in Oslo that has been in use since 1892. It hosted ski jumping at the 1952 Winter Olympics and several World Championships, and is home to the traditional Holmenkollen Ski Festival. The current hill was built between 2008 and 2010.

What is the difference between a real-photo and a printed postcard?
A real-photo postcard is produced photographically on photo paper, so it shows fine detail, smooth tonal transitions and often a glossy surface. A printed postcard is made on a press, and under a magnifier you will see a dot screen. Real-photo postcards are usually valued more highly by collectors.

Why do collectors like postcards of old ski jumps?
Postcards of sports venues that were later rebuilt or demolished are valuable records of their original appearance. Ski jumps changed their profile and stands many times, so each postcard captures a particular stage. Collectors also seek them for their link to the Olympic Games and famous competitions.
