Expert note – FAQ

Why is the greeting signed Pepík?
Pepík is a common Czech diminutive of the name Josef. According to its description, Josef Masopust used it on this postcard in the greeting Z Brazílie zdraví Pepík. Signing with a nickname shows the personal, friendly nature of a message meant for people close to him.

How does the stamp help date the postcard?
The Brazilian R$ 1.85 stamp from 2011 commemorates the centenary of the birth of actor, composer and writer Mário Lago. Because it is affixed to the card, the postcard can have been written and signed no earlier than 2011, which helps with dating it.

What is a postcard signed by several people worth?
Postcards signed by several people are often a memento of a shared trip or meeting. With sports autographs it is important that the signatures are genuine and ideally backed by provenance. Illegible signatures can often be identified by comparing them with verified autographs of the group.
