Expert note – FAQ

What was the Spartakiad in Czechoslovakia?
The Spartakiad was a mass gymnastics event in socialist Czechoslovakia, where thousands of participants performed rehearsed routines. National Czechoslovak Spartakiads were held at Strahov Stadium in Prague, preceded by district and regional rounds. They took place in 1955, 1960, 1965, 1975, 1980 and 1985.

How does a resin-coated badge differ from an enamelled one?
Resin-coated badges have their coloured areas covered by a thin layer of clear material that protects them and adds gloss. Unlike enamel, resin is not fired, so it is softer and may yellow or peel over time. This cheaper technique was widely used for commemorative badges in the 1970s.

How should stick pin badges be stored?
Keep stick pin badges dry so the pin does not corrode, ideally pushed into felt or a foam backing. Avoid bending the pin repeatedly, as it may snap at the solder joint. Protect the resin surface from sunlight and heat and do not clean it with solvents; a soft dry cloth is enough.
